Obama Home Affordability Plan of 2009-2012
Important: The content below is not professional advice, including legal, financial or advice as a foreclosure consultant. Please see what we do here
The Obama Administration has introduced a comprehensive Financial Stability Plan to address the key problems at the heart of the current crisis and get our economy back on track. A critical piece of that effort is Making Home Affordable, a plan to stabilize our housing market and help up to 7 to 9 million Americans reduce their monthly mortgage payments to more affordable levels.
The Home Affordable Refinance Program gives up to 4 to 5 million homeowners with loans owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac an opportunity to refinance into more affordable monthly payments. The Home Affordable Modification Program commits $75 billion to keep up to 3 to 4 million Americans in their homes by preventing avoidable foreclosures.
Why Are There So Many foreclosure Program Names?
Are they all the same? What are the differences? Who are they for?
There is a lot of confusion about the various foreclosure relief programs being offered today. This is due to fact that the names have changed just as often as the plans have changed. Let us try to clear this up:
The Bush Administration offered the "Hope Now Program" and then the "Hope For Homeowers Program". Both of these efforts were to encourage lenders to offer loan refinances and loan modifications to homeowners in trouble. However, this program was voluntary for the lenders to participate. Unfortunately due to a lack of incentives and a weak credit market these programs were not widely supported by lenders. These were more like Government encouraged programs, but not Government required programs.
The Obama administration then came out with a "homeowners bailout" plan. The overall goals of this plan were detailed out in what was called "Obama's Foreclosure Relief Plan". This plan laid out how to increasing incentives to lenders and homeowners for the Hope Now and Hope for Home owners programs. It also went on to create a new program called the "Make Home Affordable Plan". The Make Home Affordable program requires lenders to participate and help homeowners who pass a stringent financial hardship test. All of these programs have two basic options; A refinance option and a loan modification option.
So to put all the plans in a nutshell we have
The Obama Foreclosure Relief Plan
that lays the groundwork for 3 specifc programs.
The Make Home Affordable Program
The Hope Now Program
The Hope for Homeowers program.
